The Combined APSAD and Cutting Edge Addiction Conference

Two nations, ten cultures?

4-7 November 2007

Aotea Centre, Auckland, New Zealand

The Combined APSAD and Cutting Edge Addiction Conference (“The Combined Conference”) came about through the vision of Professor Ann Roche in Australia and Dr Murray Hunt in New Zealand. It represented the coming together of the main treatment-orientated addiction conferences in the two countries; a special one-off trans-Tasman cooperative event for 2007.

Every country can be considered a natural experiment on how to best cope with modern human problems, such as addiction. Combined national meetings, such as The Combined Conference, present a unique opportunity for comparing and contrasting national understandings and solutions to these problems.

Professor Ann Roche delivered a plenary at this conference, and various NCETA staff will presented during oral and/or poster sessions.

Hosted by the Australian Drug Foundation (ADF) and the Community Alcohol Action Network (CAAN)

Following the success of the 'Thinking Drinking' conference held February 2005, the ADF and CAAN held a subsequent conference in Melbourne in February 2007.  Thinking Drinking II: From Problems to Solutions was the conference for those wanting to develop solutions to the risky drinking culture in Australasia. It focussed on how to change attitudes, customs and policies in order to create sustainable change.

Professor Ann Roche gave the conference opening address outlining the key findings from the 2005 meeting and setting the scene for the 2007 meeting; and Dr Ken Pidd presented on the potential of the workplace for achieving cultural change in relation to drinking.

Thinking Drinking: Achieving cultural change by 2020

Hosted by the Australian Drug Foundation

21 - 23 February 2005

Melbourne, Australia

Thinking Drinking: Achieving Cultural Change by 2020 (Thinking Drinking 2020) was a unique 3-day international conference which challenged professionals, policy makers and workers to decide on the cultural changes needed to reduce the enormous burden of alcohol problems.

Thinking Drinking 2020 bought together expert generalists and futurists with alcohol experts to analyse social trends that will shape our future and to explore the implications for alcohol policy and practice. Conference participants joined invited speakers to develop the strategies we need to produce a healthier Australia and New Zealand by 2020.

Thinking Drinking 2020 was designed for all human service workers in public health, alcohol and other drugs, prevention, youth, welfare, health promotion and education.

Professor Ann Roche was contracted by the Australian Drug Foundation (ADF) to lead a rapporteur team including NCETA Research Assistant Belinda Lunnay to produce a written report emanating from ‘Thinking Drinking: Achieving Cultural Change by 2020’. The conference report may be accessed from the ADF website (see below).
