Basic concepts of Major Depressive Disorder and Dysthymia in young people in a biopsychosocial framework are introduced. Models for depression and preventative strategies are also discussed. This is an introduction to assessment of depression and diagnostic formulation, with an emphasis on risk assessment in young people. We hear public opinion on identifying depression in young people. Research findings and current opinions on the use of biological and psychological interventions for depression in young people are presented. A psychiatrist talks about the use of anti-depressant medication in young people. We also hear public opinion on accessing professional help for young people with depression. We also hear the perspective of a family on their dealings with depression as well as a young person s personal statements about living with depression. An introduction to Bipolar Disorder (assessment, diagnosis and biological treatments): Participants are introduced to the basic concepts of bipolar disorder, diagnosis and diagnostic difficulties, with reference to major research findings. This is followed by a discussion on optimal pharmacotherapy in bipolar disorder. Early intervention in Bipolar Disorder: Young people with bipolar disorder have a negative prognosis. This discussion highlights a model of early intervention in bipolar disorder, with particular reference to the difficulty in detecting and recognising early bipolar disorder. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) in Bipolar Disorder: Finally, participants are presented with emerging literature that suggests the efficacy of psychological treatments for Bipolar Disorder. With reference to case material, Dr Macneil takes participants through the initial psychological assessment, CBT formulation and CBT principles.&LVALx r@Psychology is concerned with understanding people's behaviour and their mental processes. In undertaking the Bachelor of Applied Science (Psychology) you will cover broad areas of study including information processing; mental processes and behaviour; and the factors which lead people to differ in the way they think and behave. This course offers psychology as a specialist area of study together with complementary studies in health sciences. The Graduate Diploma in Psychology is a general applied psychology program emphasising the application of knowledge to problems arising in professional practice. It provides a thorough understanding of the theoretical framework within which various approaches and techniques have been developed. Experimental design relevant to applied research is an important aspect of work within this course. The practicum component of the course provides appropriate practical experience in the application of psychological principles and research methods to the functioning of individuals, groups and organisations. The PhD (PhD) candidate completes a program of research culminating in a substantial thesis. Psychology, as a discipline, is broad ranging and spans such topics as perception, sensation, the biological basis of behaviour, motivation, development, cognition, learning, communication, social and group behaviour, and abnormal behaviour. Psychology provides valuable analytical thinking skills, as well as a range of other skills, including problem-solving and program evaluation skills that are valuable personally and in many professions. An Honours year in Psychology focuses on developing and consolidating the knowledge and skills acquired during undergraduate study, with particular emphasis on utilising those skills in a sustained and purposeful way by conducting independent research. Psychology is the scientific study of how people behave, think and feel. It is a broad ranging discipline that spans topics including brain function, memory, conscious experience, lifespan development, social behaviour and the full spectrum of functional and dysfunctional behaviour. Undergraduate students will gain an understanding of how to apply the scientific perspective to psychological phenomena in the laboratory and in the real world. The Bachelor of Applied Science (Psychology) (Honours) assumes, and builds on, the content and research methods areas of psychology provided by the three-year undergraduate psychology sequence offered by the School of Psychology at Deakin, and accredited by the Australian Psychological Society (APS); or an equivalent APS-accredited sequence (see below). The Honours program is designed to provide students with the knowledge base and research skills to enable them to undertake a higher degree by research in psychology, to undertake advanced professional training in psychology, or to seek employment in an area of psychology using the skills acquired during a four year degree.
