Comorbidity Professional Development Scholarships

 

Background information

 

As part of the National Comorbidity Initiative (NC), the Australian Government allocated $1.8 million to the Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) and Mental Health (MH) Comorbidity Professional Development Scholarships Program.  The program was coordinated by NCETA on behalf of the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing.

The aim of the Comorbidity Professional Development Scholarships program was to:

  • Build clinical expertise in the detection and treatment of mental illness for the alcohol and other drug workforce by providing professional development grants,
  • Build clinical expertise in the detection and treatment of substance abuse for the mental health workforce by providing professional development grants,
  • Scope and critique Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) and Mental Health (MH) training nationally applicable to the AOD and MH workforce, and
  • Support alcohol and other drug treatment services to release staff for professional development.

Scholarships

 

Three rounds of Comorbidity Professional Development Scholarships were held.

  • Round 1.  15 October 2007 – 12 November 2007,
  • Round 2.  5 February 2008 – 3 March 2008,
  • Round 3.  28 July 2008 – 25 August 2008.

As at July 2009, no further Scholarship rounds were planned.

Outcomes of the three Scholarship rounds held included:

  • 132 scholarships were awarded totalling $1,632,268,
  • 105 scholarships received full approval, and 27 received partial approval,
  • As at 30 June 2009, 63 scholarship holders had successfully completed their professional development activity,
  • The duration of scholarship activities ranges from 2 days to 4.5 years.

Education and training report & database

 

As part of the Comorbidity Professional Development Scholarships program, NCETA undertook a review of training courses designed to enhance workers’ comorbidity (CM) skills in relation to alcohol and other drugs (AOD) and mental health (MH).  Findings are available on a CD Rom or can be downloaded from this site.

 

The CD, Alcohol & Other Drugs, Mental Health & Comorbidity: Australian Training Courses Database 2008, contains an interactive Microsoft Office Access Database containing details of 1,192 courses available in Australia in 2008, including:

  • Accredited courses in AOD, MH and CM
  • Non-accredited courses in AOD, MH and CM
  • Psychology courses.

 

A number of PDF reports are also included for people who do not have the Access computer program.
