National Training Package for Medical Practitioners on Illicit Drug Issues

The alcohol and other drugs (AOD) field is a deceptively complex area. GP's are increasingly called upon to deal with these complexities that include polydrug use and co-existing mental health problems. So the National Training Package for Medical Practitioners in Illicit Drug Issues was developed.

The National Training Package comprises three distinct components:

  1. Alcohol and Other Drugs: A Handbook for Health Professionals. This is a comprehensive 300 page AOD handbook for health professionals.
  2. Resource Kit for GP Trainers on Illicit Drug Issues. This Kit provides an assortment of educational materials to help GP trainers deliver AOD training to GPs.

Workforce Development 'TIPS' (Theory Into Practice Strategies): A Resouce Kit for the Alcohol and Other Drugs Field

The Workforce Development (WFD) 'TIPS' project involved the development of a unique range of user-friendly and practical WFD tools and resources for the AOD workforce targetted at supervisors, managers, policy makers and other key individuals within the AOD field who are likely to engage in WFD activities and interventions. The aim of this project was to enhance both understanding of WFD and capacity to implement WFD interventions and programs.

The products developed as part of the project are designed to facilitate managers, supervisors & other key frontline workers in the AOD workforce to:

  • effectively support frontline workers (eg, mentoring, stress management)
  • ensure high levels of skill and knowledge (eg, professional development strategies, clinical supervision)
  • facilitate positive organisational change (eg, change management tools and resources)
  • design and support effective team work (eg, approaches to improve cohesion and communication)
  • optimise staff motivation and satisfaction (eg, approaches to effectively supporting and rewarding staff, effective methods of providing feedback).

The project has four distinct but interrelated components:

  1. A WFD manual (overview of WFD in general; practical advice & guidance on key WFD challenges and tools)
  2. Resource package (case studies, WFD tools and information sheets).
  3. WFD website (to provide ongoing support and advice).
  4. Interactive dissemination strategy (workshops)
